Divine Health and Wellness Center, Inc. (DHWC, Inc.) is a non-profit, 501c3, woman, minority and veteran-owned health and wellness organization created to provide a sustainable infrastructure that creates and implements innovative community-based health and wellness programs and projects that serves underserved community members and provides front end solutions to various public health issues that are prevalent in low-income minority communities. Our organization seeks to improve the health and health outcomes of community residents who suffer a disproportionate burden of chronic health conditions and who have poorer outcomes from those conditions due to health inequities in our health care system. Our mission is to create a sustainable infrastructure of evidence-based exercise, recreation, and empowering health education programs and services to address health disparities in minorities and to increase health equity by addressing issues such as physical inactivity, child and adult obesity, poor chronic disease management, and poor lifestyle choices. Research shows that exercise and healthy lifestyle choices can prevent, treat, and better manage over 35 chronic conditions, and The Divine Health and Wellness Center, Inc. (501c3) was established in July 2019 to facilitate these evidence-based programs aimed at reducing health disparities and increasing health equity in minority communities.

The Divine Health and Wellness Center, Inc., has conducted a diverse range of programs, including a 14-year summer fitness camp for kids, out of school sports and fitness programs, annual health and wellness events, community health initiatives, community-engaged research projects, and a child health equity project. Operating as a beacon of health and wellness, Divine Health and Wellness Center, Inc. serves urban communities, including Park Heights, Coldspring Newtown and surrounding communities with a specific focus on improving the health of community residents and inspiring healthy lifestyles using exercise and empowering health education. With commitment to community-centric programs, our organization actively addresses the challenges faced by communities of color in the areas of health equity. Our organization is uniquely positioned to be an industry leader in the community-based health and wellness sector by creating innovative programs where health care is augmented right in the community to help address health equity concerns related to physician shortages, and lack of access to adequate health care and lack of access to health promoting amenities in underserved communities.

Our plans include expanding our reach in the Park Heights and surrounding community by creating partnerships with physicians at Sinai Medical Center, Park West Medical Center and various other community and community health organizations, as well as faith-based organizations, and local community leaders to help ensure the lasting impact and success of our programs.

As part of our business expansion, the Divine Health and Wellness Center, Inc. plans to

  • Expand our services to serve children, adults, and older adults in Park Heights with evidence-based fitness programming
  • Partner with community recreation centers, churches, and federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) to reach underserved populations
  • Conduct randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in a community-engaged format to show the efficacy of our programs prior to launching them
  • Launch an Exercise is Medicine ® (EIM) program in partnership with area physicians and community health organizations.

Our planned programs are aligned with priority areas for Healthy People 2030 Initiative, and the American College of Sports Medicine Association’s (ACSM) “Exercise is Medicine” (EIM) initiative to make physical exercise assessment and exercise prescription a standard part of health care, and Community Engaged Research (CEnR) where community members aid in research efforts to ensure they have input on how research is conducted in their communities. We also plan to use evidence-based sports, fitness, and health education programs to improve the health and health outcomes of minority populations.
